The Whys and Hows of UV Mapping

I have been recieving a lot of emails in regards to UV maps and unwrapping; and most of the questions seem to revolve around a fundemental misunderstanding of what UV maps are and what seams are. So in this video I show and explain in depth what UV maps are and how the computer unwraps models so you can predict what you map will look like before you even unwrap it. Now that is power.

Here is the blend if you want to follow along at home.

  2. Waow ! Fantastic tutorial ! I was searching for something like that ! I've watched the entire video and I've learned some new tips very usefull. Many thanks ! Is it possible to have a second part, with new other features explained ? : how to manage a texture image ? How to keep it in the same folder of the .blend file ? How to pack the image in the file ? How must I consider a UV wrapping in the low-poly mesh version and in the same mesh with a subsurf applied ? Is it better to apply the subsurf before unwrapping or after ? Can you give a complete example of painting a texture (ea with MyPaint) and show all the practical ways to apply it in a more sophisticated model (suzanne ?). I know that I'm asking so much, but your explanations are so clear, that a new second part will be a great treasure for all the blender's beginners ! ;o)

  3. First off, your not asking to much but it sounds like you already know how to do all that ;) My plan is one more modeling tutorial and then 3 texturing tutorials. So one of these I will make sure to cover at least in part some of these. :)

  4. Three texturing tutorials in the next future ? Yessss ! You're a great guy ! In fact, I'm trying to do my best to learn Blender, but I've always questions in my head : how to do this or this in the correct way ? I can do more and more things every day, but are they correct ? Tutorials like yours help a lot to do things in a better way ! I stay tunned to your blog ! Thanks for your answer ! ;o)
